Root Canal Treatment

When the tooth pulp (living cells within a tooth) is injured or exposed by caries or trauma, it may eventually degenerate and  requires root canal treatment (endodontic).

What are the causes of pulp?

  • Caries

  • Trauma e.g. hard knock, sports injury, accidents

  • Deep fillings

  • Dens evaginatus - natural occurring connection to premolars (esp. in Asians)

What is the process of Root Canal Treatment?

  • Local anaesthetic is given

  • Opening is made at the top of crown to gain access to the root canal system

  • Using file and rotary instruments to clean, shape and disinfect the canal system

  • X-ray is taken to determine the length of the root canal

  • Medication is applied on the canal system for disinfection

  • More than one appointment may be necessary to complete the treatment

  • Canal system is fully sealed after completion of treatment

  • Post and crown may be necessary to reinforce or protect the tooth
