Root Canal Treatment
When the tooth pulp (living cells within a tooth) is injured or exposed by caries or trauma, it may eventually degenerate and requires root canal treatment (endodontic).
What are the causes of pulp?
Caries
Trauma e.g. hard knock, sports injury, accidents
Deep fillings
Dens evaginatus - natural occurring connection to premolars (esp. in Asians)
What is the process of Root Canal Treatment?
Local anaesthetic is given
Opening is made at the top of crown to gain access to the root canal system
Using file and rotary instruments to clean, shape and disinfect the canal system
X-ray is taken to determine the length of the root canal
Medication is applied on the canal system for disinfection
More than one appointment may be necessary to complete the treatment
Canal system is fully sealed after completion of treatment
Post and crown may be necessary to reinforce or protect the tooth
Front Teeth Root Canal Treatment
Teeth with history of trauma and deep fillings
Complex Root System
Lower Premolar
